Background

  • Mosquitoes, black flies and sandflies are a constant threat to health and comfort.
  • Many of them act as a vector for many of the world’s most serious diseases, both parasitic e.g. malaria (Anopheles), lymphatic filariasis (Anopheles, Aedes, Culex and Mansonia), leishmaniasis (Phlebotomus sp), Onchocerciasis (Simulium) and viral e.g. yellow fever, dengue and encephalitis (Aedes and Culex).
  • Vector control, when feasible, can play a major role in the disease’s prevention.

Legendary Bacterium

  • The microbial control agents Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) & Bacillus sphaericus (Bs), have been employed in the integrated control programmes of mosquitoes and black flies worldwide for long time..
  • After more than 100 years since the discovery of Bt, We believe that Bt the magic bacterium of the 20th Century, could continue to be a brilliant star in 21st Century…

The aim of the Project

Our plan to produce three mosquito & fly biopesticides have been developed by our research group with cooperation with the scientists in Wuhan Institute of virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences

  1. Bs Mosquito-Larvicidal Liquid Formulation
  2. Bti Mosquito-Larvicidal Liquid Formulation
  3. Bti/Bs Complex Mosquito-Larvicidal Liquid Formulation

The application of these three products has been tested and gave very promising results both in the lab and field.

Capacity

The totally annual output of this producing line is about 1500 tons of various products. Of which:

  • 500 tons of Mosquito-Larvicidal Liquid Formulation (300 tons of Bs with the potency of 200IU/mg, and 200 tone of Bti with the potency of 1,200IU/mg)
  • 1000 tons of Bti-Bs Complex Biopesticide.

Outlook

  • The production line is suitable for producing any Bacterial products e. g. Bacillus Sp. without adding any equipment and workshop space.
  • The Bt products using different strains can be also applied for the control of the pests in crops, vegetables, forest, fruit trees and forage grass.
  • The same production line could also produce another Bt complex biopesticide.

Present Market status

  • Since 1991, WHO has applied 400 tons of Bti liquid formulation in Africa for control of Onchocerciasis.
  • Furthermore, for eradication of filariasis, WHO also organized large-scale application of Bs formulation in Cameroon, Tanzania, Brazil, India, Sir Lanka, Europe and North America.
  • Since 1985, 1500 tons of Bti and Bs liquid formulation has been widely used in China, i.e. 120 tons/year.
  • The annual usage of Bti powder formulation was about 60 tons in Canada. There is no available data about using this type of products in the Arab countries and Middle East.

Potential Market

  • Africa, Middle East and Mediterranean regions are part of the areas plighted by malaria, leishmaniasis and other tropical diseases.
  • The incidence of mosquito-transmitted disease still remains very high in some areas. Large quantity of pesticides will be needed for controlling these disease-borne vectors. Besides, these kinds of bio-pesticide will be needed for controlling different mosquitoes and flies in Asia, America.
  • So, it was estimated that thousands of tons of bio-pesticides should be needed each year for disease-vector controlling, such as Culex, Anopheles, Aede, Phlebotomus and Simulium.
